ABSTRACT
Diagnosis and treatment planning of the orthodontic patient involves the evaluation of four areas: the TMJs and musculature, the airway, the face, the dentition and periodontal structures. The function of respiration is highly relevant to orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. For the normal growth of the craniofacial structures, the normal airway is one of the important factors. By understanding the normal growth of the skull, the significance of the growth and function of the nasal cavities, the nasopharynx, and the oropharynx have been interpreted. Surgical orthopaedic and fixed appliance therapy has been advocated by clinicians to treat patients wih airway dysfunctions.
